
Openings Are a Language, and They Say Different Things
Not all cracking means the same thing. Treating every line the same way is why so much money gets spent on repairs that do not hold. What follows is the short version of how to tell them apart, because the correct response differs completely between them.
Straight lines, running with the drive
Long openings following the direction of travel, frequently near the middle or a construction joint, are typically shrinkage and aging. They are the least alarming variety and the cheapest to deal with. Left open for a couple of winters they stop being cheap, because they are a route into the layer that carries weight.
Lines running across it
Openings at right angles to the direction of travel, spaced with some regularity, are usually thermal — the material contracting in cold weather and relieving the stress at intervals. Also routine, also worth closing, and also harmless right up until water starts using them.
A net of interlocking pieces
Cracking that has joined into an interconnected pattern of small shapes is a different category altogether and it is not a surface problem. It is what happens when the pavement is flexing more than it was built to because the ground beneath is no longer supporting it. Filling a network like that treats the least important part of what is going on.
Openings around the sides
Damage running along the outer few inches, often with the shoulder eroded lower than the pavement beside it, is a support problem at the boundary rather than a material fault. Restoring the shoulder is frequently more useful than anything applied to the pavement itself, and it is one of the few repairs a property owner can genuinely do without equipment.
Filling: When It Is Excellent Value and When It Is Not
On pavement that is otherwise in good order, closing openings is among the best-value work available in this trade. The reasoning is simple and worth stating plainly, because it is the whole argument: an open crack is a channel into the aggregate that is holding up the vehicle. Close the channel and the water goes elsewhere. Leave it open through a season of freezing and thawing and the conversation shifts from a modest repair to a substantial one.
The seasonal timing here is not a sales device. Openings closed before the cold sets in are closed for the period when the damage actually happens. The same work done in spring is perfectly worthwhile and it has already missed the winter it was needed for, which is why the identical job is worth noticeably more in autumn than it is in April.
Where filling stops making sense is on a surface that has already begun flexing, or one carrying interlocking damage across large areas. At that point the money is going into the symptom. The honest answer depends entirely on which of those two situations a property is in, and that is visible on site in a few minutes to somebody who knows what to look at.
Why the Same Hole Keeps Coming Back
A recurring hole is the most common repair complaint and it nearly always has the same cause: the hole was filled rather than repaired. Those are different operations.
A hole exists because the material and the ground underneath it gave way together. Shoveling cold material into a ragged, unprepared cavity puts something in the space without addressing either half of what caused it. The edges are still crumbling, the ground below is still soft and still wet, and there is no compaction to speak of. It survives until the next freeze, or until the next heavy vehicle, whichever arrives first.
A repair that lasts looks quite different. The damaged area is cut back to square edges into material that is still sound, which usually means removing a good deal more than the visible hole. What is beneath is examined and corrected rather than covered. New material goes in and is compacted in layers so that its density matches the pavement around it. It is more work by a wide margin, and it is the difference between doing this once and doing it every spring.
Full-Depth Sections
Where the ground beneath has genuinely failed, the only durable answer is to go all the way through. A rectangle is cut, everything inside it is taken out to the bottom of the structure, the aggregate is replaced and compacted, and the section is rebuilt and tied to what surrounds it.
This costs more per square foot than anything else on the list and it is regularly the cheapest option in total, because it is the only one that stops the clock. Repeatedly patching the surface over a failed area is a subscription. Cutting it out is a purchase. When a small area keeps deteriorating while everything around it stays fine, that is the case for the full-depth section rather than another round of the alternative.
Standing Water and Low Spots
A depression that keeps water after rain is a repair item even when the pavement in it looks perfect. Water sitting on a surface finds its way in eventually, and it will do so at the low point first.
The local complication is that the reverse condition is easy to misread. On ground where water leaves downward through the rock, an area can be draining badly and still be dry an hour after a storm, because what is leaving is not running off — it is going into seams below and taking fines with it. So the absence of standing water is weaker evidence here than it would be elsewhere, and a low spot that seems to drain quickly is still a low spot.
The Point Where Repair Stops Being the Answer
Repairs are worth doing while they are buying years. There is a threshold past which they are buying months, and recognizing it saves real money.
Rough guides, none of them absolute: when the areas needing full-depth work start joining up, when interlocking damage covers a substantial share of the surface, when the same locations keep returning after being repaired properly rather than badly, or when the total for a season of patching starts to approach a meaningful fraction of rebuilding. Any one of those is a reason to have the whole property assessed rather than to book another visit.

My drive has cracks. Is it too late? Usually the opposite — cracks are the cheapest moment to intervene and the point at which a small amount of work buys years. What makes them expensive is time, because an open crack is a route for water into the stone below. The honest version depends on which of those two situations the drive is in, and that is visible on site.
What does the freeze and thaw actually do? Water gets into a crack, freezes and expands, and levers the crack wider. That repetition is what turns a hairline into a gap and a gap into a pothole, and it is why an autumn seal is worth more than a spring one.
Can anything be done about a hole in January? Something, yes, but treat it as first aid rather than treatment. Cold patch material exists precisely for this and it will keep a hazard out of the way of tires until conditions allow a proper fix. It is not a permanent answer and nobody honest will present it as one, because the edges have not been cut square, the ground beneath has not been addressed, and the material is not hot mix. Put it in, mark the date, and plan the real repair for the season.
